Little attention has been given to the underwater cultural resources of Veracruz, one of the most important ports in the
Americas from the 16th to the 19th century. An archaeological rescue carried out in August 2010 by the Subdirección de
Arqueología Subacuática (SAS) at the Bajo Hornos reef in the southern part of the harbor yielded several archaeological
remains that testify to the port’s commercial dealings, as well as to its intense nautical activity. For more than three
decades, SAS, the branch of Instituto Nacional de Antropologia e Historia (INAH) in charge of underwater archaeology
in Mexico, has been active in diverse projects in interior waters such as lakes and caves as well as in the Gulf of Mexico,
the Paci!c Ocean and the Caribbean Sea (Luna 2011:123). "e survey carried out was not extensive to the whole reef,
but rather to a small area a#ected by the construction of a Marina in the vicinity and the canal that was dug for it;
regardless, the opportunity to work there opened up a window into the underwater archaeological record of Veracruz.
Di#erent ship remains were identi!ed and recorded, presenting interesting clues to shipbuilding traditions used in the
Gulf of Mexico in historic times. Among these, a 6 by 6 meter structure was excavated, which appears to correspond
to the remains of the hull of Basque ship. "e sample of artifacts collected and documented includes ceramics, glass
fragments and ammunition that together present an interesting portrait of the products used and consumed by the
population of New Spain, later Mexico.

En el área maya, los artefactos en contextos mortuorios generalmente son utilizados para investigar la estratificación social y el simbolismo asociado a la muerte. Este artículo aporta una nueva perspectiva. Durante el Clásico maya el tipo de objetos encontrados con más frecuencia en toda clase de tumbas es el mismo: utensilios de cerámica de uso cotidiano. Muchos de estos objetos eran “matados”, es decir, mutilados para perder su función. Recientes propuestas antropológicas sobre personas dividuales han sido aplicadas exitosamente a los mayas del Clásico por Susan Gillespie. Las personas dividuales no se restringen a un cuerpo humano individual, sino que poseen un cuerpo complejo construido con las relaciones significativas entabladas con otros seres humanos, animales y objetos. Esto puede ser aplicado a la interpretación de los objetos en contextos mortuorios: al morir una persona dividual, todas las partes de su cuerpo debían ser enterradas, incluyendo aquellos objetos con los que entablaba una relación significativa y que eran sus posesiones inalienables. Si estas partes objetuales no eran “matadas”, la personalidad podía seguir vigente y ser peligrosa por su capacidad de agencia.

This is the second volume of our working glossary. We want to thank the feedback on the first volume. We are entering the words you sent us, and Massimo is currently working on this second volume. We will update the fines as soon as we can.

Almost three decades ago J. Richard Steffy (in: Tzalas (ed) Tropis II, pro- ceedings of the 2nd international symposium on ship construction in antiquity. Athens, pp 315–320, 1990, in: Tzalas (ed) Tropis III, proceedings of the 3rd international sym- posium on ship construction in antiquity. Athens, pp 417–428, 1995) voiced the need to standardize the recording and publication of shipwrecks. Cluster analysis of construction features is difficult if archaeologists record different and non-overlapping features. This paper discusses the necessity to standardize the recording and publishing of a set of consistent and compatible basic construction features when archaeologists assess, survey, or excavate wooden shipwrecks and proposes a methodology for the recording of wooden hulls. It also emphasizes the urgency of a wide and complete sharing of archaeological information in maritime archaeology.

El presente trabajo aborda los procesos de formación de contextos arqueológicos en las lagunas del Sol y de la Luna en el Volcán Nevado de Toluca. No es una investigación escrita por biólogos y geólogos para sus colegas, sin embargo procura exponer algunas características medioambientales de la laguna y la montaña que determinan el estado de conservación y la localización de los materiales culturales que reposan en sus aguas, así como las condiciones de posibilidad para la realización de investigaciones in situ. En síntesis, busca reestablecer algunos de los vínculos que se generan entre los materiales arqueológicos, los procesos geológicos e hidrológicos, la fauna y la flora, con el fin de elucidar sus efectos sobre el surgimiento y devenir de los contextos arqueológicos, así como sobre las posibilidades de acceder a ellos con propósitos científicos.

This is a sixth draft of a catalogue of early modern European wooden hull remains, part of Charles Bendig' and Arnaud Cazenave de la Roche's research, and an invitation to all interested scholars to collaborate. Our main objective is to make all data available to all scholars and in the process try to standardize the recording of this type of hull remains so that we can make databases (as paleontologists do) that may allow comparative studies.

Se propone que el camino más productivo consiste en efectuar una síntesis que tome elementos de cada una de las posturas que se exploran.
